1.0   PURPOSE

This policy establishes ºÚÁϳԹÏ’s commitment to ensure access to information, resources and policies related to student housing.

This policy is prepared in compliance with the directive from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities dated July 15, 2024, requiring the publication of Student Housing Policies by Postsecondary Institutions.

2.0   SCOPE

This policy applies to all housing services provided by ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï for ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï students, including for both on-campus and off-campus housing.

3.0   DEFINITIONS

3.1   ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï Housing Department: The department responsible for overseeing all on-campus and off-campus housing services. This includes daily Residence operations, coordinating off-campus partnerships with local landlords, and providing student referrals.

3.2   Residence Staff: A unit within the housing department, accountable for admission to and operation of on-campus student residences.

3.3   First-year student: A student attending ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï for the first time in the first year of their studies.

4.0 POLICY STATEMENT

ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï is committed to providing housing options and housing-related services and support for a diverse student population, with a focus on finding suitable housing for domestic and international first-year students. ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï will ensure that information regarding these services and support is readily available to students in person or through easy-to-access websites.

5.0   PRINCIPLES & GUIDELINES

5.1   Commitments

  • 5.1.1   ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï will ensure that information regarding student housing is easily accessible to students. Students will be able to access housing services, supports and resources, whether online or through direct engagement with the Housing Department.
  • 5.1.2   ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï will provide a suitable range of options in line with size/enrollment. This includes on-campus, as well as support for students seeking off-campus accommodation.
  • 5.1.3   ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï is committed to providing inclusive housing options supporting students’ range of needs and desire for accommodations
  • 5.1.4   ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï is committed to considering the local community environment and context and developing community partnerships when appropriate.

5.2   Institutional Infrastructure

ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï will maintain dedicated staff members to provide housing support, information, resources and the necessary guidance to all students regarding their housing options. The ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï Housing team will serve as the primary contact for all housing-related inquiries and provide appropriate information and referrals to students and community partners as required.

ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï will maintain a dedicated webpage for all housing needs that provide information, resources and contacts for students. For more information, please visit the Housing page.

5.3 Off Campus Resources

ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï will maintain comprehensive off-campus housing resources for students which include:

  • Endorsed third-party housing databases
  • Housing search, leasing/legal support, and general education
  •  Safety and other resource information
  • Short-term housing information and options
  • Emergency housing
  • Financing opportunities and assistance

5.4 Housing Options for Incoming Students

As required by the Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï will provide support for incoming students to find suitable housing. The Housing Department will assist students in finding housing in the community when on-campus housing options are not suitable or available.  

6.0   ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

6.1   Director, Student Services & Success

  • Reviewing and updating all housing policies as per the review schedule listed in the individual policies
  • Ensuring student information, resources, and supports are in place for student housing

6.2   Housing Department & Residence staff:

  • Being the primary contact for all housing-related inquires and provide the appropriate referrals to other College and community partners as required
  • Maintaining and updating on and off-campus resources lists and ensuring availability of resources on websites.
  • Connecting with local landlords to provide safe and affordable housing for ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï students living off-campus.
